What does the initial naturopathic visit entail?
Traditionally, an initial consultation with a Naturopathic Doctor is approximately 90 minutes long and includes a thorough health history and discussion, as well as a physical examination.  Since Naturopathic Doctors are interested in all aspects of health, including the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual, the initial interview is lengthy in order to obtain as much information about you as possible; this enables your Naturopathic Doctor to arrive at a proper assessment and create the best plan for you.  I, however, also offer a half hour initial consultation for those that are new to naturopathic medicine.  The half hour initial consultation is to learn a little bit more about naturopathic medicine, to uncover the chief health concerns of the patient, and to develop an idea of how you and naturopath can best work together.  It is not intended to replace the 90 minute consultation, but is geared towards those who are still deciding if naturopathic medicine is an avenue they wish to pursue.

Are naturopathic consultations covered by OHIP?
Treatment by a naturopathic doctor is not at the present covered by OHIP, however most extended health care plans do cover the cost of your visits. It's a good idea to check at your workplace to find out whether your benefits package includes naturopathic medicine.

Is Naturopathic Medicine Regulated?
As of 2008, regulation of Naturopathic Medicine in Ontario switched from the Drugless Medicine under the same provincial legislative body as Medical Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacists, and other conventional health care providers.  This will also enhance the profile of Naturopathic Medicine from a governmental and insurance perspective and put additional emphasis on consumer demands and consumer safety.  Overall, this legislative change is anticipated to further drive the demand for Naturopathic care.
